Hi, I’m Sara, the Spatistic Traveler, and I’m thrilled to be your guide on this journey where relaxation meets adventure. You might be wondering what makes this blog different from the many lifestyle and travel blogs out there. Well, let me share a little about myself: I’m a late-diagnosed AuDHD woman (that’s ADHD + Autism, if you’re curious!) with over 15 years of professional experience in the spa industry. I’ve had the privilege of working in wellness settings across two different countries, which gives me a unique, insider perspective on the spa experience, and I have visited over 30 countries (and counting!)
But here’s where things get even more interesting: as a neurodivergent person, I approach the spa world with an eye on sensory sensitivity and the unique challenges neurodivergent individuals often face in these spaces. Whether it’s lighting, sounds, textures, or scents, these elements play a huge role in shaping the experience, especially for those like me, who have heightened senses. You might wonder how a spa could be overstimulating; after all, they’re meant to be relaxing, right? And you’d be absolutely right. But for neurodivergent individuals, the challenge isn’t just about achieving a state of relaxation; it’s also about maintaining that state. We’re far more sensitive to subtle discomforts that may occur before, during, and after a treatment, which can easily disrupt an otherwise enjoyable and peaceful experience.
This blog is meant for people like me who crave calm but need it on our terms. For the ones who’ve walked into a massage room and wanted to walk right back out. For anyone who’s ever felt like they had to “perform” relaxation instead of actually experiencing it. It is meant to be a place where other neurodivergent wanderers with low support needs and their loved ones can find both inspiration and information, all while embracing the relaxation and adventure that spas and travel have to offer. And it’s for the industry, too, because I truly believe spas can evolve. That with intention, awareness, and design that honors neurodiversity, we can build spaces that welcome, soothe, and restore a wider range of people, and not just those who fit the current mold.
In the weeks ahead, I’ll be sharing:
• Personal spa experiences from a neurodivergent perspective,
• Sensory-friendly products and rituals,
• Interviews with spa professionals and clients,
• Stories from my own healing journey,
• And stories from my travels around the world.
Whether you’re neurodivergent, burnt out, or just curious about what rest could look like, you’re welcome here. Let’s rethink relaxation. Together. Thanks for being here. Stay soft, stay curious…and maybe take a deep breath before you go.
More soon.
— Sara
